A review of 38 studies published between 1966 and 2005 concludes that omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and other foods, do not prevent cancer, as has been suggested. Omega-3s have been linked to lessening the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Valassis Communications, which produces coupon inserts for newspapers, has sued competitor News America Marketing. The suit alleges News America sold inserts below cost and threatened grocery chains with higher prices on in-store coupons if they did not meet demands.
The Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers Association have issued new suggestions to help retailers and manufacturers cut down on unsaleable goods, which have continued to rise. The Improving Unsaleables Management Business Practices -- Joint Industry Recommendations report recommends stronger ties between retailers and manufacturers.
Medicare chief Mark McClellan said states will be reimbursed for money they put up to ensure elderly patients received needed drugs during the startup of the new prescription drug benefit program, when glitches disrupted normal drug purchases. McClellan said he expects the states "to work with us. ... We want to get people into the prescription-drug coverage as fully and completely as possible."
U.S. poultry producers have launched an advertising blitz in response to a recent drop in foreign poultry consumption related to bird flu fears. A billboard in Atlanta reads "Poultry is safe. Just cook it!"
