Critics of the Bush administration's proposed 2007 budget contend its elimination of 42 education-related initiatives, including a major school-tech grant program, is at odds with the president's recent call to boost the country's global competitiveness. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings says the reductions are needed to free up money for expanded teacher training and other priorities the president mentioned in his State of the Union address.
