A European Commission-backed project to make use of umbilical cord blood in banks throughout Europe includes research into using stem cells from the blood to create bone structures. About 2 million units of cord blood have been stored for use in transfusions and treating leukemia, so the EC launched a three-year project with York University researchers to see if stem cells could be used to repair bone defects and fractures.
