Vitamin D and calcium supplements may help lower the risk of broken hips in women over 60, but the supplements do not appear beneficial in preventing bone fractures overall, according to the largest study ever of the supplements. In the seven-year study of 36,282 women ages 50 to 79, women who received 1,000 milligrams of calcium and 400 units of vitamin D had better hip bone density than a group given dummy pills, but they fared no better in avoiding fractures of all kinds.
