Qwest Communications founder Philip Anschutz said he will leave the company's board after a long period of turmoil. Cannon Harvey, an associate of Anschutz, also said he is resigning from the board, leaving Anschutz, Qwest's biggest shareholder, without representation.
Many smaller handset makers likely will have to seek mergers if they are to stay afloat in the competitive market, analysts say. Pressure to reduce handset prices also will play a major role in strategic moves by big and small manufacturers, analysts add.
At a hearing Tuesday on Capitol Hill, senators from largely rural states said they back a "technology neutral" Universal Service Fund that would collect revenue from all communications platforms -- including broadband. FCC chief Kevin Martin is said to be leaning toward a "numbers-based" approach that would expand the USF to cover new types of phone services such as VoIP.
MTV Networks has named John Cucci COO of Comedy Central, Spike TV and TV Land, where he will manage corporate strategy, business development and finance. Colette Chestnut replaces him as EVP and CFO of MTVN.
