To help recruit math, science and special-education teachers, New York City will pay experienced educators who agree to work for three years in the toughest middle schools or high schools a $400 monthly housing stipend for two years and up to $5,000 up front toward move-related expenses. A school system official noted that many of the projected vacancies for the upcoming school year will have to be filled by educators certified through alternative programs.
