British medical equipment maker Smith & Nephew won FDA approval to sell an artificial hip implant the company says is less invasive. The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System, which uses a metal ball and cup to replace the ball of the femur and hip socket, requires doctors to remove only a portion of the top of the femur, resulting in a less-invasive procedure than a total hip replacement.
