Milk crate theft has become more costly for companies, as police estimate that millions of dollars are lost to the theft every year. Pilfered crates made from the expensive plastic resin, which costs double the price it did three years ago, are being stolen by plastic recyclers or thieves who sell to recyclers to be grinded up and reused. Rockview Farms lost 424,000 milk crates in 2005, up from 350,000 in 2004. Replacing them cost the southern California dairy business $1.6 million.
