Washington, D.C., and other communities are using ground-up tires to install rubber sidewalks, a plan that is expected to increase safety and ease maintenance. While rubber tires are up to three times as expensive as concrete slabs, they also will last longer than sidewalks because they will not crack from freezing weather or tree roots; they could reduce the number of slip-and-fall accidents and consequent lawsuits; they are easier on the joints; and they are even environmentally-friendly.
