The Holiday Village Mall in Great Falls, Mont., has transformed into a successful enclosed and unenclosed hybrid retail center. Challenges come from the weather in the state and the long distances many shoppers travel, as well as a decline in visitors from Canada, but retailers say foot traffic is steady, said General Manager Devin Hartley.
Developers such as Macerich Co. and Simon Property Group are reshaping older mall properties after Macy's shuttered many of their anchor stores. In addition to adding theaters and specialty shop space, they are bringing in nontraditional anchor tenants such as grocers and discount stores.
Several malls in the Marin, Calif., area are revamping and retenanting their properties, adding restaurants and reconfiguring anchor stores. Macerich Co., for example, plans to redevelop its Mall at Northgate, including adding a new outdoor-dining food court.
