Workers planned to bring in about 1,400 cubic yards of concrete to help form a segment of the flooring for Michigan State University's $730 million Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. The concrete work began early Wednesday morning. The facility is expected to be up and running between 2020 and 2022, and the project as a whole is expected to generate 5,000 construction jobs.
With a "give 'em a break" safety coalition working to protect construction workers, Michigan's highway construction zones are safer than 10 years ago. The coalition announced that the number of crashes, injuries and deaths in highway work zones decreased by 20% in 2006, which adds up to more than 1,300 fewer accidents.
