Researchers say they found a variation in the alpha-synuclein gene is responsible for about 3% of Parkinson's disease cases and may be involved in others as well. The lead researcher says the study backs efforts to develop a treatment to lower the levels of alpha-synuclein protein produced by the gene as a way to reduce the risk of developing the disease or slow its progression.
