The gene therapy field once again is booming, with more than 300 trials under way in the U.S. and other countries. In addition to therapies that treat single faulty genes involved in rare diseases, some researchers are investigating the technique for complicated, lethal and widespread diseases, such as cancer and HIV/AIDS. Discovery of the adeno-associated virus, which comes in different variations, has created a better delivery method that can even target specific areas, and imaging advances have helped sharpen which cells are targeted.
