Faced with an overwhelming workload and other challenges, half of the 550 new teachers in Boston this year likely will quit within four years on the job, the Boston Teachers Union says. Efforts by the district's Office of Human Resources to expand training and mentoring, however, have raised new-teacher retention rates from 77% in 2002-03 to 84% in 2005-06.
