The Los Angeles Times reports that the five finalists for the post of Los Angeles schools superintendent include Tom Vander Ark, a top official with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Ted Mitchell, a former president of Occidental College (who said he has withdrawn from consideration); and Carlos A. Garcia, a former head of the Clark County, Nev., school district. The school board reportedly is also considering nonfinalist Alan Bersin, California's Secretary of Education.
