Cambridge, Mass.-based Pervasis Therapeutics, with $15 million in venture capital, is currently testing a "cellular Band-aid" to repair veins and arteries while minimizing later problems. The repair consists of a soft wrapper lined with a healthy colony of living blood-vessel cells that is wrapped around the damaged vessel. Although the hurdles inherent in tissue engineering remain, the technique could have major implications for using implanted human cells to repair the body.
