A new research paper challenges a government panel's recommendation two years ago that aggressive efforts should be taken to reduce cholesterol levels in patients at risk of heart disease. The new study says there is not enough solid scientific evidence to support the low targets recommended or the notion that the lower the LDL cholesterol levels, the better. The study's authors, however, do support the use of cholesterol-lowering statins.
