Texas doesn't know how many students who fail one of the state's five exit exams don't earn their diploma, because the state does not track them once they complete their coursework and leave the school system. Lawmakers have mandated that starting August 2007, those students who do not pass the state exit exam or earn their GED by Aug. 31 each year will be counted against their school's graduation rate.
