A recent ruling by the U.S. Copyright Office will make it legal for consumers to "unlock" their mobile phones if they want to switch carriers. T-Mobile USA says it will perform this service after a customer has had a service contract for 90 days; Cingular Wireless said it would unlock users' phones if they fulfill the terms of their contract; and Verizon Wireless will unlock phones not sold by the carrier if they work on its network.
