Avalon Dairy, the oldest continuously run dairy in British Columbia, Canada, has broken ground on its new facility. The new $10 million plant will allow the company to increase production of its new organic-products line, as well as its conventional products.
Veteran Dean Foods employee Arley Smit, 71, is set to retire after 50 years of testing milk at the company's Sioux Falls processing plant. "You never worried about Arley," said the plant manager. "He always showed up on time, and he was never sick."
California growers proposed regulations that would initially make abiding by new safety regulations voluntary. Farmers that institute the rules would receive a seal of approval, and eventually the regulations would become mandatory. Critics say the rules are not specific enough and that the state should form its own regulations.
