Researchers at Geron Corp. say they have shown that human embryonic stem cells produce compounds that help stimulate the survival and regeneration of neurons in nerve-damaged spinal cords of rats. The biotech company earlier had reported human embryonic stem cells helped replace myelin, but this finding -- involving its GRNOPC1 stem cells -- producing multiple nerve-growth factors.
