Two hundred of Washington state's 296 school districts answered a survey by the Healthy Youth Alliance, which found roughly a third of the districts have banned teachers from discussing contraception, except for abstinence, during sex ed classes.
More than 25,000 high schoolers in Tampa, Fla., attend schools with block schedules, but a push to expand the instructional day could mean dropping the "four-by-four" plan. Students say the change could alter their plans for fitting in classes, while the school system says it can save at least $28 million in additional salaries if the current teachers just add 30 to 50 minutes each day.
Reports indicate that Mark K. McQuillan is slated to be appointed Connecticut's education commissioner. McQuillan reportedly is in favor of a longer school day and school year and bolstering teacher recruiting.
