In the past few years, discount airlines in Europe have made great strides and have attracted a large percentage of former train travelers through low fares, attractive routes and reduced travel times. Now, railways from France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and Belgium are getting together to compete with the discount airlines.
Celebrating 50 years of independence, Malaysia has launched a major marketing effort to boost tourism. A string of incidents that point to racial profiling, however, are causing some to think twice about visiting.
"Authorities have an obligation to educate the local populace about the importance of tourism and their role and to be vigilant and protective of anti-tourist incidents," an American Society of Travel Agents representative told the BBC.
Luxury wildlife tours are no longer solely about big game or traditional safari hot spots, such as Kenya and South Africa. Travelers today are looking for more unusual adventures and wildlife with an ecologically responsible twist.
