Internet Users Worldwide: 1 Billion and Counting

The U.S. remains the single largest Internet market in the world with 181.9 million Internet users in 2006, but eMarketer predicts China is likely to overtake the U.S. before the decade is out. The number of Internet users in China is already greater by tens of millions than in the next three largest online populations, Japan, Germany and the U.K. The industrialized countries of Asia lead the world in terms of penetration rates. Over 70% of South Korea's population uses the Internet, and rates are not much lower in Japan and Australia. Both Canada and the U.S. have Internet penetration rates of around 63%, while the U.K., Germany, France, Italy and Spain have all yet to hit the 60% mark.
