Burger King has announced that the company will begin buying eggs and pork from suppliers that do not confine their animals in cages and crates, and will favor chicken suppliers that that use gas, or "controlled-atmospheric stunning," considered more humane than electric shocks to knock birds unconscious before slaughter. Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive of the Humane Society of the United States, welcomed Burger King's initiatives, saying, "That's an important trigger for reform throughout the entire industry."
