The leader of New York state's Catholic Conference says church leaders are opposed to embryonic stem cell research, and he urged lawmakers not to pass the governor's proposal to invest $2.1 billion in stem cell and other biomedical research. Richard Barnes says the proposal is vague about the type of stem cell research to be funded, and the state should not be funding speculative science when it already is deeply in debt.
