Two film projects about the late gay icon Harvey Milk, who was the first out elected official in the U.S., are vying to be the first to get to the big screen. Bryan Singer is to direct the film version of the Randy Shilts book, "The Mayor of Castro Street," for which Warner Independent Productions almost has secured financing, while Gus Van Sant, who once was supposed to helm the Shilts project, now wants to direct an untitled Milk script by Dustin Lance Black being shopped around to studios.
