A study of rats that were given high-calorie foods indicates that obesity may be caused by an addiction to those foods that is as potent as addictions to nicotine and other drugs. Researchers found chemical changes in the brains of rats who overindulged, and said the findings may be useful in treating obesity.
New labels will show national origin of beef, lamb, pork, produce and peanuts beginning in Sept. 2008. Agricultural interest groups, farmers and grocers say the labeling may confuse consumers and cause the cost of meats to rise, but federal officials say the new labeling rule is a certainty.

Loblaw Cos. plans to expand its President's Choice private-label business to 35% of the company's overall revenue by adding more private-label perishables and prepared foods. The private labels now comprise 25% of Loblaw's business.
