Nanoparticles made partly of iron are being investigated as noninvasive tools to detect early cancers. The magnetized particles are injected into the body and a superconducting quantum interference device determines whether they have bound to any cells. A Harvard radiology professor said the technique is more sensitive than an MRI and if imaging issues can be resolved, the technique could be more advantageous than traditional scanning.
