Lawmakers today will debate whether or not to create a new regulator for mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The proposed regulator would have the authority to to limit the size of the mortgage-backed securities portfolio. The White House on Wednesday expressed displeasure with an amendment added recently that would allow the regulator to limit the portfolios only if they are a risk to themselves, not the whole economy.
