The percentage of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and AIDS infections spread through blood transfusions is less than 1% in advanced countries, but India has a rate of 2.75%, according to the National Aids Control Organisation and UNICEF. The director of the state blood transfusion council said some private, trust-run and hospital-based blood banks do not follow standard procedures for blood transfusion safety.
