Students from a Florida school for children with hearing impairments recently attended a performance of the musical "Wicked," with the dialogue and lyrics translated into sign language courtesy of a nonprofit. The Open Doors program provides sign-language translation for people who cannot hear as well as audio descriptions for people with visual impairments in an effort to make performances more accessible.
"Wicked" problems are complex, unprecedented issues that ordinary strategic planning tools can't handle. They can't always be solved, but they can be coped with by staying true to the corporate purpose, involving stakeholders, communicating and focusing on action.
Chinese customers are becoming increasingly wary of the food they buy as the country slowly attempts to sort out its safety regulations. The government recently sentenced Zheng Xiaoyu, the former head of the food and drug agency, to death, and announced a system of recalls.
Many companies including Kraft Foods, Nestle and Hershey have worked with Berry Plastics to retool packaging to make it greener. Wal-Mart also is pushing to eliminate all waste by offering a "packaging scorecard" to help its suppliers calculate the net environmental effect of factors they use in packaging.
