Women-owned businesses are missing out on federal contracts from particular industries, including manufacturing, transportation and real estate, found a study commissioned by the Small Business Administration. Women, however, do not appear to be discriminated against when the overall monetary value of contracts was analyzed. "You have to put yourself out there. It takes persistence to understand [government protocols]," said Gerriann Fagan, owner of The Prism Group LLC and president of NAWBO's Birmingham chapter.
