As travelers become more self-sufficient, travel agents have adapted by becoming specialists and are filling the role of consultant rather than simply selling tickets. Another change in the industry is that agents must be more technologically savvy because of the proliferation of sources for obtaining airfare, hotel rooms and other travel products. Technology, however, also makes it possible for agents to work from home, even if they are part of a large agency.
