Although teacher turnover cost U.S. schools more than $7 billion in the 2003-04 school year, according to a National Commission on Teaching and America's Future report, few schools have systems in place to reduce attrition rates. Retaining highly effective teachers should be a priority, the commission urged, and not only because replacing them costs schools anywhere between $4,366 and $17,872 per teacher.
