A team of U.K. scientists, headed by mathematician Dr. Roman Hovorka, is using math to develop an artificial pancreas that calculates and delivers the exact amount of insulin needed by the body, 24 hours a day. The pancreas, currently being tested on 5- to 18-year-olds with Type I diabetes, is still a ways from market.
