The CDC has confirmed the presence of two new strains of norovirus, a group of viruses that cause gastroenteritis, from more than 1,300 outbreaks reported across 24 U.S. states in 2006. The virus is particularly dangerous for the very old, the frail and the very young and is responsible for the death of at least one woman last year.
Some doctors are beginning to recommend bariatric surgery as a possible treatment for diabetes, as studies suggest that the procedure cures the most common form of the disease in more than 75% of patients. Advocates of the procedure claim the surgery could allow diabetics to live without medicines and insulin injections, but other diabetes experts say it "doesn't measure up well" as a primary treatment.
