Toronto-based Longo Brothers Fruit Market uses its in-store inventory for both online and offline purchases, which means that perishable groceries have a better chance of being sold. But retailers who operate this way are discovering that it creates a supply-chain "black hole" in which products that have physically left the shelves but have not been paid for yet are still included in the inventory for online consumers.
