One-sixth of the Chinese population is threatened by polluted water, despite more than a decade's worth of cleanup efforts, the National Peoples' Congress environment and resources protection committee said in a report. "This situation is directly related to the fact that water pollution standards for some of our country's industries are too low," committee chairman Mao Rubai said, calling for stricter standards and better enforcement.
