The Bush administration reiterated its rejection Wednesday of a Democratic proposal to pay for repairs to "structurally deficient" bridges with a five-cent-per-gallon increase in the gasoline tax. At a House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing, Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said, when asked about the proposal being spearheaded by committee Chairman Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., that "increasing taxes would do little if anything to improve the performance of our bridges and roads."
