Vernice Walkine, director general of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, says the Bahamas plans to reinvent the destination after a decline in visitors attributed to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, the U.S. housing slowdown and the general economy. "With the WHTI, we lost that quick getaway vacation market, which was our franchise," Walkine said. "Now they have to have passports to do this, which has cut into that business for us."
