A study of elderly members of health maintenance organizations confirmed that influenza vaccines significantly reduced the incidence of hospitalization and flu-related deaths in that age group. The 10-year investigation found that flu vaccinations cut the risk of death by 48% and the risk of hospitalization due to pneumonia or influenza by 27% in mostly healthy, older patients.
