Garmin, a leading maker of global positioning systems, is entering the wireless market with a phone that incorporates GPS, amid predictions that GPS-equipped handsets will outsell navigational devices by next year. Garmin's Nuvifone will compete with a handful of devices, including Apple's iPhone, that offer a variety of advanced features.
Travel organization AAA and Verizon Wireless have announced a new service called AAA Mobile, which allows Verizon Wireless customers with GPS-enabled phones to request roadside assistance, get visual and audio driving directions, and find local AAA-related points of interest. The service is available to AAA members and nonmembers alike and costs $9.99 a month.
Clearwire today starts selling a new wireless broadband card for laptops that can be used in the 44 markets where the company provides service using its proprietary technology. Clearwire will upgrade its service to mobile WiMAX next year.
Apple announced Tuesday that France Telecom'sOrange will have the exclusive on the iPhone in France, with phones going on sale Nov. 29. As per French law, the iPhone will be sold there both with and without a contract.
