The drug topiramate, a treatment for migraine and epilepsy sold as Topamax by a unit of Johnson & Johnson, may help alcoholics stay away from heavy drinking, researchers report. In a study of 371 male and female alcoholics, Topamax reduced the percentage of heavy-drinking days per week from 81.9% to 43.8%, compared with a placebo, which lowered the percentage from 82% to 51.8% in the patients over a 14-week period.
