The cargo ship crash that caused 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel to pour into San Francisco Bay this month might have been avoided if the bridge had a different type of fender system. Officials in Maine say the same type of collision occurred five years ago when a tanker crashed into the Casco Bay Bridge in Portland, but thanks to a state-of-the-art fender system, the bridge -- and the bay -- were protected.
