Transplant patients have contracted HIV and hepatitis C virus from an organ donor, the first documented case of HIV transmission from an organ donation in more than 20 years. The four patients received organs in January at three different hospitals in the Chicago area from a donor who was infected three weeks before death. Though standard screening determined the infected patient participated in what the CDC calls high-risk behavior, ELISA testing did not discover the presence of HIV or HCV because the patient's immune system was not yet affected.
