ZymeQuest is testing technology that can convert blood types A, B and AB into type O, and hopes to make it widely available by 2009. A senior fellow at the Bristol Institute for Transfusion Sciences says the technology could benefit those with sickle cell anemia and thalassemia in the shorter term. One researcher says scientists still need to learn how to convert rhesus positive into rhesus negative blood, two sub-types of each blood group.
