Coca-Cola Co.'s $4.1 billion acquisition of Glaceau underscored this year's most popular trend among major food and beverage companies: the acquisition of value-added and functional businesses. Nestle also gave credence to the trend with its recent purchase of baby food brand Gerber as part of its plan to become known as a nutrition, health and wellness company.
