Irvine, Calif.-based device makers Edwards Lifesciences Corp. and CoreValve have designed heart valves that can be implanted without major surgery and are competing to gain approval to sell their products -- first in Europe and then in the U.S. CoreValve aims to start clinical trials in the U.S. in 2008, and its device is used at 30 sites in Europe. Edwards says it has received orders from 18 European medical centers for Sapien valves.
