The FDA is drafting a proposal that would allow pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers to provide doctors unabridged copies of research from medical journals that would serve to guide them for their off-label prescriptions. The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Henry Waxman, D-Calif., urged the FDA to suspend drafting the new guidance, saying this "would open the door to abusive marketing practices that will jeopardize safety, undermine public health, and lead to an increase in unapproved uses of powerful drugs."
